ABSTRACT

In order to study the distribution and dynamics growth of wild Dipsacus asper resources in the Wulong district of Chongqing, 9 sample plots were selected for 12 consecutive months in the natural distribution area of the D. asper in Wulong district by using the sample line + plot survey method to conduct a field survey. The results showed that D.asper was distributed in forest edge wasteland or shrub-grassland, and growbetter with loose yellow-brownsoil or red soil, and poor with lithologic soil or impounded surface water. The growth curve of the plant height from June to July and the ground fresh weight from July to August showed a turning point, it might consume large amounts of nutrients during its flowering period, resulting in the restriction of vegetative growth. The highest temperature in the distribution area of D.asperoides in Wulong district is less than 30 °C, the minimum temperature is about 0 °C, and the rainfall is 1 241-1 392 mm. Its growth environment is no severecold in winter, no heat in summer, and abundant rainfall. The main growth stage of D.asper is from July to October, and the range of root dry rate was 0.162 5-0.239 7 in Xiangkou, 0.154 9-0.223 6 in Baima Mountain, and 0.143 7-0.203 3 Xiannv Mountain. The vegetative growth and dry matter accumulation synchronized in the main growth stage, and the accumulation rate of dry matter was faster than that of vegetative growth. The correlation analysis between indicators and root fresh weight showed that the fresh weight of the aerial part and root fresh weight had the best correlation.

ABSTRACT

·AIM: To explore the effect of different incision phacoemulsification on corneal endothelial function and tear film function in senile cataract (SC) patients. ·METHODS: Totally 90 SC patients (90 eyes) admitted to our hospital were randomly divided into the 2. 2mm group ( n = 47, 47 eyes, 2. 2mm corneal micro - incision phacoemulsification) and the 3. 0mm group ( n= 43, 43 eyes, 3. 0 mm clear corneal micro - incision phacoemulsification). The indexes of corneal endothelial function and tear film function were compared between the two groups before and after operation. ·RESULTS: There was no statistical difference on the average phacoemulsification time (APT), mean effective phacoemulsification time( EPT ),average phacoemulsification energy ( AVE) and preoperative and postoperative intraocular pressure between the two groups (P>0. 05). There were statistical differences on the tear break-up time (BUT), basal tear secretion test (ST-Ⅱ), corneal sodium fluorescein staining (SCSF) score, corneal endothelial cell count, central corneal thickness and the variation coefficient of corneal endothelial cells between the two groups (P<0. 05). At 1wk and 1mo after operation, the BUT in the two groups was significantly lower than that before operation (P<0. 05) while the ST-Ⅱ was significantly higher than that before operation ( P< 0. 05), and the SCSF first increased and then decreased (P < 0. 05 ), and corneal endothelial cell count was significantly lower than that before operation (P<0. 05), and the central corneal thickness and the variation coefficient of corneal endothelial cells significantly increased (P<0. 05). The changed degrees of BUT, ST-Ⅱ, SCSF score, corneal endothelial cell count, central corneal thickness and corneal endothelial cell variation coefficient in the 2. 2mm group were less than those in the 3. 0mm group (P<0. 05). ·CONCLUSION: Phacoemulsification for SC patients can cause some damage in corneal endothelial function and tear film function, and 2. 2mm corneal micro-incision have less damage and faster early recovery.

ABSTRACT

·AIM:To investigate and compare the application of two screening models in the detection of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). ·METHODS: The clinical data of 600 premature infants (1200 eyes) who underwent screening of eye diseases in the Department of Ophthalmology during the period from January 2016 to January 2017 were analyzed retrospectively. The fundus lesions were examined with binocular indirect ophthalmoscope (BIO) and the third generation of wide-angle digital retinal imaging system (RetCam Ⅲ). The examination results and adverse events during operation were statistically analyzed. ·RESULTS:In 1200 eyes of 600 patients, the probabilities of ROP detected by BIO and RetCam Ⅲ were 10.92% and 10.75%, respectively (P>0.05). With BIO as the golden standard, the accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value of RetCam Ⅲ in examining ROP were 98.67%, 93.13%, 99.35%, 94.57% and 99.16%, respectively. There was no significant difference in the stage of ROP detected by BIO or RetCam Ⅲ (P>0.05). The probabilities of non-ROP lesions examined by BIO and RetCam Ⅲ were 4.83% and 4.58%, respectively (P>0.05). With BIO as the golden standard, the accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value of RetCam Ⅲ in examining fundus non-ROP diseases were 99.67%, 94.83%, 99.91%, 98.21% and 99.74%, respectively. During the screening of BIO and RetCam Ⅲ,there were 17 cases (2.83%) and 7 cases(1.17%) with adverse events, respectively (P<0.05).·CONCLUSION: The examination results of RetCam Ⅲ are basically the same as those of BIO for ROP and non-ROP diseases. However,RetCam Ⅲ has more advantages in reducing adverse events during operation.

ABSTRACT

Alpha7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α7 nAChR) is a ligand-gated ion channel critical for cognition, learning and memory. Deficiency of neuronal α7 nAChR has been implicated in the cognitive deficits and neuropsychiatric disorders. Chemical activation of α7 nAChR improves neurological functions in animal models. In this study, we designed and synthesized a series of indolizine derivatives with various substitutions at different positions on the scaffold, and investigated their structure-activity relationships (SAR). All compounds were screened and evaluated for their agonist activity using the two-electrode voltage clamp recording system in Xenopus oocytes expressing human α7 nAChR. Compound 16c carrying 6-methylindolizine moiety activates α7 nAChR with EC50 at 1.60±0.19 μmol·L-1 and maximum effect (Emax) of 69.0%±2.8% compared with 3 mmol·L-1 ACh. Compound 17b with 8-cyclopropyl substitution shows an increased Emax of 81.1%±9.3% with EC50 at 2.74±0.74 μmol·L-1. The SAR of the series shows that introducing the small hydrophobic groups at 6- or 8- position can improve both potency and maximum effect.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To evaluate the skin irritation and sensitization potential of the swine acellular dermal matrix treated with hyaluronic acid (SADM-HA).</p><p><b>METHODS</b>(1) Skin irritation test. Twelve New Zealand rabbits were divided into SADM-HA group, allogeneic skin group, and (human) xeno-skin group according to the random number table, with 4 rabbits in each group. Four test sites were designed on the back of each rabbit. Two test sites of each rabbit in the three groups were covered with SADM-HA, allogeneic skin, and xeno-skin, respectively. Another test site was covered with gauze containing 200 g/L sodium dodecyl sulfate solution as positive control. The last test site was covered with gauze containing normal saline as negative control. The primary irritation index and cumulative irritation index of each material were calculated. (2) Skin closed-patch test. Sixty guinea pigs were used. Fifty-four guinea pigs were divided into SADM-HA group, allogeneic skin group, and (human) xeno-skin group according to the random number table, with 18 guinea pigs in each group. Twelve guinea pigs in each of the three groups were correspondingly induced and stimulated by SADM-HA, allogeneic skin, and xeno-skin, with 6 guinea pigs in each group treated with ethanol-soaked gauze to serve as negative control. The remaining 6 guinea pigs were treated with gauze containing 25% α-hexylcinnamaldehyde ethanol solution as positive control. The rating scales of Magnusson and Kligman were used to grade the condition of skin after being treated with above-mentioned materials to evaluate skin sensitivity to them at post stimulation hour 24 and 48. Data were processed with the non-parametric test of independent samples.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>(1) In the skin irritation test, the primary irritation indexes of the three dressings in SADM-HA group, allogeneic skin group, and xeno-skin group were respectively -0.04, 0.13, and 0.08. The cumulative irritation indexes of the three dressings in SADM-HA group, allogeneic skin group, and xeno-skin group were respectively 0.27, 0.10, and 0.25, which were close to those of negative control within the three groups. The skin irritation of each of the three materials was negligible. (2) In the skin closed-patch test, all scores of the three dressings in SADM-HA group, allogeneic skin group, and xeno-skin group were between 0 and 1. The scores of SADM-HA group and allogeneic skin group were close to those of negative control within the two groups (with U values respectively 188.00 and 90.00, P values both above 0.05). The differences were statistically significant between each material of the three groups and positive control (with U values respectively 19.00, 59.00, 21.50, P values all below 0.01).</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>The SADM-HA is safe and reliable without skin irritation and sensitization, and it has encouraging prospect in clinical application.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>BACKGROUND</b>Infection due to pandrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PDRPA) has become a challenge in clinical practice. The aim of this research was to summarize the treatment of large-area burns (60% - 80%) with PDRPA infection and respiratory failure in our hospital over the last two years, and to explore a feasible treatment protocol for such patients.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>We retrospectively analyzed the treatment of five patients with large-area burns accompanied by PDRPA infection and respiratory failure transferred to our hospital from burn units in hospitals in other Chinese cities from January 2008 to February 2010. Before PDRPA infection occurred, all five patients had open wounds with large areas of granulation because of the failure of surgery and dissolving of scar tissue; they had also undergone long-term administration of carbapenems. This therapy included ventilatory support, rigorous repair of wounds, and combined antibiotic therapy targeted at drug-resistance mechanisms, including carbapenems, ciprofloxacin, macrolide antibiotics and β-lactamase inhibitors.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>Four patients recovered from burns and one died after therapy.</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>First, compromised immunity caused by delayed healing of burn wounds in patients with large-area burns and long-term administration of carbapenems may be the important factors in the initiation and progression of PDRPA infection. Second, if targeted at drug-resistance mechanisms, combined antibiotic therapy using carbapenems, ciprofloxacin, macrolide antibiotics and β-lactamase inhibitors could effectively control PDRPA infection. Third, although patients with large-area burns suffered respiratory failure and had high risks from anesthesia and surgery, only aggressive skin grafting with ventilatory support could control the infection and save lives. Patients may not be able to tolerate a long surgical procedure, so the duration of surgery should be minimized, and the frequency of surgery increased.</p>
